Amanuel is an Eritrean refugee and artist, and has been on a difficult and dangerous journey. The 25-year-old has been deaf and mute since birth, but he expresses much through his drawings, including compassion and hope for the future. UNHCR on Wednesday evacuated Amanuel from detention in Libya, and toward safety in Italy, part of a three-month operation that has led to the evacuation of more than 1,000 extremely vulnerable individuals to third countries.

After decades of frustration and broken dreams, Jirair has finally been recogized as a citizen of the country where he was born.

Decades of statelessness not only stopped 24-year-old Jirair from working legally or obtaining health insurance. It also crushed his lifelong dream of representing Georgia at an international wrestling championship.

Jirair’s life was transformed in 2015 after he applied to be recognized as stateless. That year, he received his first identity card and travel document.

He also attend the ceremony in New york marking the first anniversary of the #IBelong Campaign launched by UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, where he spoke about what it meant to be stateless.

In 2016, changes to the law enabled Jirair to prove his presence in Georgia in 1993. The amended citizenship law allowed local authorities to prove the physical presence of a person based on the testimonies of relatives, friends and other witnesses, enabling Jirair to prove close ties with Georgia.

Finally, in June 2017, Jirair proudly received his Georgian citizenship.

“We’re heading to a main settlement in Kutapalong. This is my first trip in Bangladesh as an ambassador for UNHCR.”

Kutupalong camp, Bangladesh is the largest in the world, and over half of the refugees are children. Many fled horrors and traveled for days by foot to get here and they miss home.

Miyavi’s music gave them a break from reality. Some children MIYAVI met arrived just five days before. They’re now receiving safety, shelter, and a space to play and they have made a BIG impact on MIYAVI

“We are going through the camp. We had another great time with children at the school. I was really impressed at the way they are teaching kids. I was really amazed. And I was really happy to be able to play that song with the kids. I will never forget that moment and that song.”

UNHCR Special Envoy Angelina Jolie visited Za'atari refugee camp on January 28th, meeting a family and girls displaced by Syria's nearly seven-year-long war. Jolie, in a statement to media from the camp, underscored that any negotiated solution to the long-running conflict must respect the human rights and dignity of all Syrians, including the millions who have fled and are living in neighbouring countries.

More than 400,000 Burundian refugees who fled fleeing insecurity and hardship need urgent assistance. UNHCR and its partners are working to provide aid and protect the refugees who are living in Tanzania, Rwanda, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Uganda and other nearby countries. But severe underfunding means Burundi's refugees are unable to live with the safety and dignity they need and deserve.

UN Refugee Chief Filippo Grandi visited South Sudanese refugees in Uganda and Kenya, to call attention to the plight of refugees from the world’s youngest nation. The conflict in South Sudan has caused more than 2.5 million people to flee, making it Africa’s largest refugee crisis. The High Commissioner appealed for more aid for those displaced, but reiterated that the only real solution to the crisis is peace.

Millions of refugees leave behind professional careers when they flee their homes, winding up as low-paid laborers - if they are even able to work. But in Brazil, one NGO is working to help refugees win recognition for their university diplomas, paving the way for them to return to chosen professions and contribute their skills to society.
