Ernesto Valverde has picked his squad for Saturday’s visit to Eibar, for which he will have to make do without the injured Thomas Vermaelen. The Barça boss has also left out Denis Suárez, Paco Alcácer and André Gomes.

The 18 heading to the Basque Country on Friday evening are: Ter Stegen, Semedo, Piqué, Rakitic, Sergio Busquets, Iniesta, Luis Suárez, Messi, Dembélé, Cillessen, Coutinho, Paulinho, Jordi Alba, Digne, Sergi Roberto, Aleix Vidal, Umtiti and Yerry Mina.

Before the squad was announced and prior to heading to the airport, the first team worked out at the Ciutat Esportiva Joan Gamper, where they were joined by Carles Aleñá and Adria Ortolá of Barça B.

FC Barcelona held its second training session of the week on Thursday morning, just over 48 hours ahead of its next La Liga match, which puts it against in-form SD Eibar on Saturday afternoon. Kickoff at the Ipurua Municipal Stadium is set for 4.15pm CET.

Barça opened the week with a recovery session on Monday — following Sunday’s scoreless draw with Getafe at Camp Nou — and was granted a pair of rest days on Tuesday and Wednesday, before returning to work on Thursday.

But while manager Ernesto Valverde and the coaching staff are keeping the players focused on Saturday’s match at Eibar, next week’s impending Champions League last 16 battle with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge — set for Tuesday night at 8.45pm CET — looms large.

Nevertheless, with next week’s much-anticipated continental clash still several days away, Thursday’s workout was all about readying for the trip to Eibar, which has put together a stellar run over the last 12 league match days and will no doubt challenge Barça, as the Catalans seek to tie a club record 31st straight league game without a defeat.

Thomas Vermaelen and Ousmane Dembélé were out on the practice field Thursday, as was Barça B’s Carles Aleñá. The session also produced a tender moment for striker Paco Alcácer, who was congratulated by his teammates on the birth of his first child — it’s a girl! — the day before.

It’s been just over a month since Philippe Coutinho left Liverpool and became the 33rd Brazilian player to join the ranks of FC Barcelona’s first team. Since then, it’s been a whirlwind five weeks in which the 25-year-old Brazilian has been slowly adapting to his new team and city.

Among the biggest highlights was his Barça debut, which came at Camp Nou on January 25th in Barça’s 2–0 win over Espanyol in the Copa del Rey quarterfinals second leg. And more recently, on February 8th, Coutinho scored his first Barça goal, which came in the second leg of the Copa del Rey semifinals against Valencia.

Seventeen hours after their scoreless draw with Getafe at Camp Nou, Ernesto Valverde and Barça were back at the team’s training center to begin the week.

While Sunday afternoon’s starters did recovery work, the remainder of the team and a handful of Barça B players — Adrián Ortolá, Rodrigo Tarín, Marc Cardona, Ballou Jean-Yves Tabla, Marcus McGuane, and Jorge Cuenca — trained as normal. Barça’s French striker, Ousmane Dembélé, had an upset stomach and did not train.

With no midweek match on the schedule this week, Monday’s workout will be followed by two rest days. The team then returns on Thursday to begin preparing for Saturday’s match at Eibar. Kickoff is at 4.15pm CET.
