Venice at carnival time. Pierrette falls in love with the artist Mario Mari and accepts his offer to share his attic with him and become his model. He makes one condition: they shall part without bitterness if need arises. Mario's painting "Laughter and Tears" wins the first prize at a competition, and, flushed with success, he leaves Pierrette and goes to Paris to paint the portrait of the beautiful Countess Sonia. Pierrette finds life insupportable and follows him there, only to be rebuffed.

At a ball, after she accidentally meets a former admirer, Captain Lombardie, she tells Mario that she has become the mistress of this Italian officer. His passion rekindled by jealousy, Mario visits Pierrette in her flat and stabs her. No longer desiring to live, he gives himself up to the police, from whom he is overjoyed to learn next morning that Pierrette was only slightly wounded. Pierrette confesses to Mario that her story of an affair was made up to spite him and that she has always loved him. A reconciliation follows, and, returning to Venice, the lovers forget their sorrows and find happiness together.

Cornelis van Baerle, like most men of fashion in seventeenth-century Holland, is a bulb enthusiast. He is competing for a big prize offered by the Burgomaster and Aldermen of the city of Haarlem to the first producer of a black tulip. He is also godson of Cornelis de Witt, who with his brother Johan, controls the destinies of the Republic. A strong royalist faction is scheming to restore the monarchy with Willem III, Prince of Orange, as King. In view of the possible success of this move, De Witt puts Van Baerle in charge of some important documents, without his knowing their contents. A rival bulb-grower, Isaac Boxtel, overhears this arrangement. The royalist schemes succeed and Cornelis de Witt and his brother are thrown into prison in The Hague. Cornelis sends a letter to Van Baerle telling him to destroy the documents and making it clear that he is not cognisant of their contents.

Meanwhile, Boxtel has informed against Van Baerle as harbouring the correspondence, and just as he receives De Witt's letter he is arrested. In the prison the gaoler's daughter, Rosa, actuated by pity and then by love, does what she can to soften his lot, and helps him in his attempt to get his three bulbs, which are wrapped in De Witt's letter, to bloom. The prison is stormed by a mob incited by Ticelaar and the De Witt brothers are done to death. Although Van Baerle is at first condemned to death, the Prince commutes his sentence to imprisonment in the Loevestein Fortress.

There one of the flowering tulips is destroyed by the gaoler Gryphus. With the collusion of Gryphus, Boxtel steals the second bulb. In Haarlem, Rosa and Boxtel both claim the prize, the girl having with her the third bulb still wrapped in De Witt's letter. The Prince of Orange arbitrates, and to confront the other claimant, has Van Baerle released. After hearing Rosa's story, the Prince decides in favour of Van Baerle, whose innocence from any political crime is proved at the same time by the letter. At the Feast of the Tulip, Cornelis is given the prize and also Rosa's hand in marriage.

A group of travellers - a magician and his assistant, a pair of newly weds, a doctor, an alcoholic lady and an inspector who plays the buffoon - find themselves in a haunted railway station. The inspector, helped by some of his fellow passengers, finds out the ghost is really a gang of smugglers.

De spooktrein is based on the English play The ghost train which had enjoyed a continuous run in the theatres from its first showing in 1918. The play's author, Arthur Ridley, is better known as private Godfrey from the popular television series Dad's Army.

Jess Newton, expecting to spend her holidays alone at her boarding school in England, receives a letter from her father asking her to come to him. Since the death of his wife, Mr Newton has been prospecting in Africa, where the discovery of a diamond mine has made him a wealthy man. At the railway station Jess is pestered by Hubert Clave, but protected by his cousin Bruce, the son of Lord Ravenhurst. It is next to the Ravenhurst estate that Newton has bought a mansion.

At a garden-party given by the Ravenhursts, Jess and Bruce meet again. Also present is Deborah Plunt, operetta star and an old flame of Bruce. Attempting to revive their relationship, Deborah kisses Bruce and is seen doing so by Newton. When Bruce comes to ask for the hand of Jess in marriage, Newton tells his daughter that she can marry him and never see her father again or renounce Bruce forever. Although dearly loving Bruce, Jess choses to stay with her father who has done so much to give her a care-free life. To forget his sorrow, Bruce leads a wild life, but when this wearies him he tells his cousin that he is going to Africa to fight the rebellious Basulos. Hubert, believing that Bruce will never return, concocts a plan to marry Deborah under the name of his cousin whom he closely resembles, so that if Bruce is killed, Deborah, as his widow, will inherit his title and wealth.

As his African possessions are in danger because of the Basulo uprising, Newton decides to go there. Jess, in the meantime married secretly to Bruce, begs her father to take her with him. By chance, all three sail on the same steamer. At sea a fire breaks out and the ship sinks. Bruce saves Newton and the two men become good friends. The survivors of the disaster, including Jess, are picked up by another ship. In Africa they hasten to Newton's hut and beat off an attack by the natives. In the fight, Bruce is wounded and taken captive. Nothing more is heard of him and he is presumed to be dead. Back in England, Deborah succeeds initially in passing herself off as Bruce's widow, thereby misrepresenting him as a bigamist. Having escaped from his black captors, Bruce and Jess returns to England and explains everything. When they attempt to flee to a foreign country, Deborah and Hubert get their just deserts when they are both killed in an automobile accident.

In De kribbebijter, Willy, the son of a baron, sets his sights on an untitled girl. He marries her in spite of his extremely curmudgeonly father who promptly disinherits him. Willy finds a job but looses it again as a result of his father's machinations. Willy's wife decides to take action and applies for the job of housekeeper in the baron's household. Helped by her sister-and-law and the baron's brother, she earns the respect of her father-in-law who is then reconciled with his lost son and daughter-in-law.

Stage actress Mary Dresselhuys was asked to audition for the leading part but did not get it. Producer Rudolf Meyer and Director: Henry Koster didn't think she was photogenic enough: "Leider gnädige Frau, sind Sie nich zu fotografieren.' (I'm sorry madam, but you are impossible to photograph). She was offered a minor part, as a consolation prize.

The public loved the film, which starred famous actors like Frits van Dongen, Dresselhuys, Cor Ruys and Sien de la Mar. The critics had nothing but praise for actors and Director: alike. The film was seen as an important departure from the popular but essentially farcical Jordaan films.

Three men and a woman play tennis on a court at the industrial estate of the Zinkwitfabriek in Eijsden.

The factory was established in 1870 by the Belgian engineer George Rocour. Under the leadership of his successor, Fernand Pisart, the company would grow into a concern with subsidiaries in France, Spain, Italy, and Great Britain. Pisart was behind many of the facilities in the region of Eijsden, including homes, a cycling track, and a tennis court.

Tennis at the time was still a relatively new and elitist sport, mainly played on private fields and grounds, which is what made it appropriate for women to play.

The opening scenes of this documentary were shot from a boat in the Zuiderzee approaching the port of Staveren. This once-famous Hanseatic city is now known as the pleasure boater’s gateway to the Frisian lakes. The film focuses mainly on Stavoren’s relationship to the Zuiderzee: the sluice, the harbour, and the promenade. We see images of children playing with homemade toys boats, and the departure train ferry to Enkhuizen, as well as its arrival. On this special boat, the wagons were transported in train formation.
