Report about the return journey of the first pilots in the Dutch East Indies, via the steamship Patria from Batavia to Marseille in the spring of 1925. This trip was made possible by the Rotterdamse Lloyd company.

The journey on the steamship Patria from Batavia (18 March, 1925) to Marseille (9 April, 1925). Shots of the passage across the Red Sea and the Suez Canal, and a visit to Port Saïd, with shots of the Arab Quarter, and the pyramids in the desert. There is a good mood aboard the Patria. The pilots and Captain Boon playfully pose for the camera. The mood peaks when an Egyptian magician appears on board and performs tricks with eggs and baby chicks, and with the nose of Van den Broeke.
This is followed by the crossing to Marseille. Shots of life aboard the ship, with Van den Broeke eating breakfast, Van den Broeke at the helm, and the tea dance accompanied by an orchestra. The arrival in Marseille, and a tour of the city. On 18 April, the pilots leave Paris for the Netherlands, with an aerial escort.

Shots of the port of Amsterdam, and of a textile factory.

A film in two parts. In the first part, we see how a pilot boat belonging to the Amsterdam-based towing company Gebroeders Goedkoop tows the English[?] ship “Ashworth” into Amsterdam’s harbour. The film contains footage of the Amsterdam’s Western harbour area. Part two shows the interior of a textile factory.

A camera on another ship pans along the bow of the Pittsburgh, and then moves alongside it. Some of the sailors board a smaller boat. The musical band, composed of crew members, sits aboard the ship, which then sails through the port of Amsterdam. In the background, the fire department carries out some water-cannon exercises with a number of boats. In the meantime, the sailors are given sandwiches. An intertitle reports that a YMCA centre has been set up on the motorboat De Albatross, at the request of the American Chamber of Commerce in Amsterdam, and with the help of the NJV and the AMVJ (the Dutch equivalents of the YMCA). The secretaries of the YMCA Amsterdam, Mr. Loosjes and and Mr. Schipper, act funny for the camera.

Costume drama about the life of William of Orange.

The film is regarded as the first Dutch sound film. On January 4 1934, the first 'official' Dutch sound film premiered in the presence of Prince Hendrik and prime-minister Colijn. The film paid homage to William of Orange and was presented as a historic document on the history of the Netherlands, highlighting the importance of prince William's role during the Eighty Years war. His story is told in a series of short episodes, spanning his sudden rise to prince of Orange in 1844 to his murder by Balthasar Gerards in 1584.

Although the popular Jordaan musical De Jantjes had been finished slightly earlier, the title of 'first Duch sound film' went to the prestigious - and very expensive - Willem van Oranje. Director: Jan Teunissen's feature debut is the only film that was ever shot in 'Philiwood' , as the Philips studios were known. The lead parts were played by famous theatre actors. The unemployed were given jobs as Spanish soldiers and anti-Spanish Dutch Geuzen (literally the Beggars, a name they proudly adopted as their own).
